Gait Analysis Services

Discover gait analysis services from our team at Injury Mechanics to learn more about your movement patterns, and discover how to optimise them.

At Injury Mechanics, we understand the impact that gait has on the body well, and how sub-optimal gait can lead to uneven physical stress, joint wear, muscles imbalances and higher risk of injury and falls.

Through our gait analysis services, one of our specialists will work with you to develop an understanding of your goals, injuries and current habits to form a solid plan.

What is gait analysis?

Gait analysis is the process of assessing how you walk or run to evaluate your body’s biomechanics and movement patterns.

In our clinical setting, we’ll use a mixture of 3D motion capture and force plate testing to spot imperfections or inconsistencies which may not be visible to the naked eye.

What's the difference between gait analysis and biomechanical analysis?

There is some crossover between gait analysis and biomechanical analysis, but they are different, and serve different purposes.

A biomechanical analysis is a comprehensive physical examination of your body's static and dynamic framework, looking at joint range of motion, muscle strength, bone alignment, flexibility and more.

On the other hand, gait analysis has a more specific focus on movement patterns whilst the body is in motion, looking how weight transfers through the body, how the feet strike the ground, and stride timing.

Signs you might need a gait analysis

There are a few common reasons for which you may need a gait analysis. Here are the key signs:

  • Persistent pain - You feel ongoing unexplained pain in the feet, heels, shins, knees, hips or lower back resulting from physical activity.
  • Uneven shoe wear - A more significant gait imbalance can cause soles to wear down much faster on one foot than the other, or in a specific spot.
  • Balance issues - If you feel unsteady, or experience regular trips or falls, we’d recommend a gait analysis.
  • Recurring injuries - You experience repeated injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, runner’s knee or achilles tendinopathy.
  • Performance plateau - If you notice your speeds, distances or general athletic performance stalling despite regular training, there could be an issue with your gait.

With any of these issues, a gait analysis may be able to uncover the underlying root causes, and what can be done to improve them.

Who gait analysis services actually benefits
Gait analysis can benefit:
Anybody going through
injury rehabilitation;
Any athletes dealing with persistent pain;
Or, even those looking to optimise their sports performance.

This service can be particularly useful for runners and other athletes, new or experienced, who are looking to prevent overuse injuries, or amend running inefficiencies.

What happens during a gait analysis assessment

  • History and goal discussion - One of our specialists will discuss with you your personal goals, current lifestyle, existing training plans and any current injuries or pain you’re dealing with.
  • Static assessment - The physical observation and assessments will begin with standing still whilst your specialist checks your alignment, leg length symmetry, spine curvature and foot structure.
  • Dynamic assessment - Following the static assessment, our professionals will use high speed cameras and recording software to record your movement patterns from all angles, whilst you walk or run for a short period. A specialist will also look for over/under-pronation as well.
  • Review and recommendations - Your physiotherapy expert will review their findings with you, taking you through how your feet, hips, knees and further joints move.
  • Implementation - From here, we can discuss with you any potential recommendations and improvements, as well as considering an implementation plan moving forward. We may also point you towards other relevant professional services, such as biomechanical analysis, strength and conditioning training and more.
